Dinner party and diarrhea

Yes, you read the title correctly. It has been such a gross day. The only thing worse that having to clean up your children’s diarrhea, is having to clean up other children’s diarrhea. One of the “perks” of my job is that I get to do just that. This morning one of my students had three diarrhea diapers and ended up needing a shower, running out of supplies and clean clothes, and having to go home. Poor kid.

Didn’t think that much about it until later tonight. We had invited a couple of friends over for dinner, she is a friend from playgroup and he works at ASPA with Michael. It didn’t go so well. You probably don’t want all the details, but this couple has one baby and with our six, things can get pretty crazy, so we decided to feed our kids first and then shove them in front of the TV like any normal people would do so that we could enjoy a nice quiet dinner with the adults. Yeah right!

Emma and Mary were whining and wanting to be held. Emma ended up on Michael’s lap which wasn’t a big deal. Mary sat up at the table with us wanting to eat with us, not really a big deal either until she fell off her chair and cracked her head on the concrete floor. Mildly embarrassing.

She calmed down and went to watch tv with her siblings. A few minutes later, Michael bust out of his chair because he had seen Mary walking towards him with diarrhea running out of her clothes and down her legs. Guess whatever is going around the school must really be contagious. As he lept up, Emma fell off the chair and cracked her head on the concrete floor. A little more embarrassment.

I was able to calm Emma down and get her to bed while Michael worked on cleaning up Mary. We got the rest of the kids down to bed and thought we had saved the evening, but about 10 minutes later we hear Benjamin screaming and then retching. He had tried to make it to the bathroom but hadn’t quite made it. I was ready for the evening to be over!

Our dinner party dwindled and when our new friends finally left, Michael and I got busy throwing rugs, sheets, blankets and clothes in the washing machine, and trying to clean up after dinner (no dishwasher here, and you can’t leave any dishes out no matter how tired you are because of the ants)

Michael jumped in the shower and we thought the events were all over but I heard Emma crying and sure enough, she was in her crib covered in fresh vomit. Being woken up by that and then being put into a shower didn’t make her very happy so she spent the next 30 minutes screaming hysterically. With vomit load of laundry number two ready to go in the washer we were ready to go to bed, but she still had four more vomiting episodes before she was done, thankfully we got that in the sink.

So, that was our evening. Not too excited about hosting another dinner party anytime soon. Not sure what tomorrow will hold, but it certainly can’t get much worse can it????

  1. Oh, poor both of you. How embarrassing when you have guests there! Life is never dull for you, is it!

  2. Oh my gosh I am so sorry. I’m laughing to myself though because any parent totally understands days like that! Really no one could have prepared me for all the throwing up and poop episodes that happen with kids. I hope everyone is feeling better!

  3. Helen– you make my life look easy, and I have never been so busy in my life! I don’t know how you do it. We will pray for a speedy recovery!

  4. Oh my gosh, that is HORRIBLE!!!! I wonder what your friends had to say about the dinner party afterwards!! Ha ha!!! I hope that everyone is feeling better today.

  5. Not fun. So sorry, Helen. But, it’s better to have more than one sick at a time to get it over with.
