I am a rock, I am an island

We just arrived home today from our week long vacation to the islands of Upolu and Savaii in Western Samoa. Leaving this island reminds me of how much American Samoa is like a rock! Now that I am back, I feel claustrophobic again! Just so that you can relate, please remember that American Samoa is only 25 miles long and 5 miles wide. This means that it is only half the size of the Isle of Wight at 146 square miles and you can’t just hop on a ferry and be on the “mainland” in half an hour. For you Americans reading this, American Samoa is only a few square miles bigger than Antelope Island, the 68 square foot island in the middle of the great Salt Lake! So now that you realize how small we are, how would you feel living here without ferry or causeway to get you back to “real life” whenever you wanted?

Our vacation “off the island” was amazing, wonderful experiences, beautiful country, and great memories, and I am in the process of uploading photos and writing about our adventures. For those of you who are not interested in the detailed travelogues, you’re going to want to skip the next few posts that come after this!

Traveling with six small children is pretty difficult. It takes a lot of planning and even more patience. Since this will undoubtedly be our only family trip off this island while we’re here, we had to make the most of it and see everything that we could, and this was reflected in the 500 miles that we put on the rental car this week! The kids excelled in math, spelling, and trivia games in the car seeing as how we didn’t have a CD player or radio (we were just thankful that we had a working air conditioner) and we sang our hearts out! We made plenty of toilet stops on the side of the road and only one accident to report all week!

Here are a few photos from the trip to give you an idea. Lots more to follow.

  1. It looks beautiful. Hope you found it relaxing in spite of various threats. In the slide after the pigs, are they your children in the waterfall? x

  2. Mum, you should know better than to call one of my vacations relaxing! Jam packed with fun and very tiring…that’s how I like to do it! Those are not our kids in that waterfall, but you will see some of them in waterfalls coming up, just working on getting my photos and posts ready…
