Easter in the eyes of a seven year old

One more Easter post…I couldn’t resist this one.  Michael is gone almost all of the day on Sundays, so a while ago I made up a schedule of activities so that the kids wouldn’t get bored each week and so that I could stay sane. Each activity lasts half an hour, and it goes from 8.30am to 7.30pm. Yes, our Sundays are that structured. Activities include writing in journals, working on faith in God goals, illustrating the Living Christ, watching a church movie, doing coloring and puzzle pages from the friend magazine, playing church games, having turns being spotlighted with old photos and home movie clips, memorizing articles of faith etc etc.

One of the things on the schedule each week when the younger two kids are napping is that I give the older four a topic and they have to plan their own family home evening presentation for that night after dinner. They rotate who does the song, scripture, talk and activity. This is definitely their favorite activity of the day. Today was easy, I gave them the topic of Easter.

The boys did wonderful jobs of picking a great song, scripture and talk, but I was blown away by Hannah’s activity which she though of and executed all by herself. I had no idea what she had been working on. She thought about this and prepared it all in less than half an hour.

She got a blank piece of paper and a pen and wrote down different events to do with Easter. She cut them out and put each one into a different colored Easter egg and then hid them all around the family room. I couldn’t believe how many there were! She chose family members one at a time to go and find whichever colored egg she chose and then had them read what she had written. In the end, we were supposed to order the events in the correct sequence. Here is the finished sequence. I kept the spelling and grammar in her original format so that you could appreciate it. I told her that she should plan the Primary activity next year!

  5. What a great activity! You are doing a wonderful job teaching your children. That was quite impressive. I’m sure they remember the principles better because they are teaching them to others. Love it!
