Hilarious Samoan names

Any of you need any baby names suggestions? Here are some that might make you chuckle. There is an email group of non-locals in American Samoa called the dissociates group. This bunch of people get together socially, advertise their yard sales or help needed, and sometimes just chat with each other about crazy things that they experience living here on “The Rock”

Lately there have been emails going around about some of the hilarious names that some of the local people use. Some of the submitters are teachers or doctors, and these people have been their students or patients. These are NOT made up names. People here really have CRAZY names (of course, they may think the same about us) I deleted the obscene ones. There were several.

As a side note, in the old days it was cultural to name your kids offensive words (either curse words or others like snot, poo, spit, …etc) if you were involved in a feud with a neighboring family or your own relatives, particularly if they were higher class than you. This is because when you call for your kids to come home…you will be yelling swear words and therefore offend or embarrass your neighbors/family who are in earshot. Can you believe that? Which is your favorite name?
Cute, but tough, Samoan kids

  1. Obviously my favorite is Puaaelo!!!!!!!!!!

  2. My mom knows a polynesian woman who lives here whose name is Bulletin Board. I think she may have been born here but her mom was an islander and thought the words were beautiful. I don’t know if she knew what they meant or not… Interesting, huh??

  3. There are so many good ones. My favorites are Popeye, Han Solo, and Larrybird.

  4. Helen, I really enjoy your bog! I look forward to reading about your adventures! Those names are pretty crazy! I can’t imagine naming my child a swear word (even though my 22 year old may deserve it at times!)
